Here’s a simple, rich, classic San Marzano Tomato Sauce you can use for pasta, pizza, meatballs, or anywhere you want that deep, authentic Italian flavor.
🍅 San Marzano Tomato Sauce (Classic Italian Style)
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced (or smashed whole if you prefer smoother sauce)
- 1 can (28 oz) San Marzano whole peeled tomatoes
- 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp sugar (optional — helps balance acidity)
- 1 tsp dried oregano OR Italian seasoning
- A handful fresh basil leaves (or 1 tsp dried basil)
- Optional: pinch crushed red pepper flakes for heat
- Optional: 1 tbsp butter (for extra richness)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add the garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant (don’t brown it).
- Add the San Marzano tomatoes and crush them with a spoon or potato masher.
- Season with salt, pepper, oregano, and sugar (if using).
- Bring to a gentle simmer and cook 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in fresh basil at the end.
- Optional: Add 1 tbsp butter for a silky, restaurant-style finish.
Tips for BEST Flavor
- Simmer longer (45–60 minutes) for a deeper, sweeter sauce.
- For smoother sauce, blend with an immersion blender.
- If using on pizza, cook it only 10–15 minutes so it stays bright and fresh.
